Phonics
Welcome to the Phonics (Read Write Inc.) page.
The teaching of 'Phonics' to young children is a gateway into the world of learning to read and write competently.
Here at Great Sankey Primary we aim to teach our children to recognise the sounds of the alphabet and learn to blend those sounds together to read and write words.
Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK's primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the high expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child’s progress.

At half termly intervals the children are given a phonics assessment sheet to decode and read. They are then grouped accordingly. At Great Sankey Primary we have a highly trained phonics team who have a wealth of experience in the teaching of Phonics. Our Phonics team include the class teachers and the teaching assistants who work closely with the children.

Classes are equipped with sound charts and picture friezes to help with daily reading and writing activities. |
Meet Fred the frog! Fred can only talk using sounds. Children are encouraged to guess the word he is saying. Press the sound buttons on the green words to read the word. Use this strategy until the word is committed to memory. |
Alien words. When children see a picture of an alien on a word card it means it’s a non-word (nonsense). The alien can’t speak real words. Nonsense (alien) words test the children’s ability to recognise sounds and blend them effectively. |
'Special friends’. When 2 letters are used to make one sound we call them ‘Special friends’. | Sound Picture cards. A picture and a rhyme facilitate quick recall of a sound. |
