At Great Sankey Primary School we firmly believe that every child should be given every opportunity to reach their full potential, whatever their background or circumstance. We hold high aspirations for all our children and believe that no child should be left behind. Pupil Premium is a percentage of our budget and this page and the attachments within it detail how it is spent in our school to maximum effect.
Pupil Premium is additional funding, from the government, provided to schools for supporting pupils to ensure they benefit from the same opportunities as all other children. Research shows that pupils from deprived backgrounds underachieve compared to their non-deprived peers. The premium is provided to school to 'close the gap' in attainment and progress.
Children that qualify for pupil premium are:
- Children who are eligible for free school meals (FSM)
- Looked after children
- Armed forces children
From April 2014 additional pupils included:
- Adopted Children
- Children under Special Guardianship on or after 30 December 2005
- Children under a Residence Order on or after 14th October 1991
All schools have the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils in their care and that can benefit wider pupils. Our staff and governors are committed to meeting children's social, pastoral and academic needs and carefully review our spending and impact every year. We use assessment information and in house school outcomes to support us in identifying barriers to learning.
The majority of our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress moving children to at least age related expectations. Initially this will be in communication, English and maths.
The range of provision the staff and Governors consider making for this group include:
- Providing 1-1 and small group work with an experienced teacher or teaching assistant focused on overcoming gaps in learning and securing core skills.
- Providing a ‘Nurture Group’ to improve attainment by improving the social and emotional dimensions of learning for targeted children throughout school.
- Providing a key worker to carry out first day contact and to work with families who children’s attendance is below national averages.
- 1:1 tutor, enabling personalised learning to accelerate progress for individuals.
Early help worker helping to overcome barriers to pupils learning with a focus on supporting social and emotional skill, attainment in reading, writing and maths.
Provision will not be aimed at children with EHCP or Special Educational Needs as funding for need is already in place.
In addition, the school recognises that the wider curriculum supports and enriches children’s development in communication, English and maths, and therefore funding will also be allocated to enable children to participate fully and actively in wider and extra-curricular activities; including class visits, residentials and after school clubs and opportunities.
As a school all teachers acknowledge the importance of diminishing differences between varying groups of pupils. Members of staff take time to understand the barriers to learning that these pupils may be facing and plan and teach accordingly. All staff are accountable to ensure that they constantly review, adapt and improve practices to ensure effective impact on pupil’s experiences and outcomes.
